Advice for new businesses
If you are starting up a new food business or taking over an existing one, you must register with the food and safety team (see contacts section of this page).
If you are starting up a new food business, we suggest that you discuss your plans with the food and safety team so there is a chance to sort out any problems before you start trading. We are happy to talk through your proposals; however, although officers can give general advice, food business operators may need to employ a specialist to give detailed assistance concerning food safety.

The Food Standards Agency website provides details of a suggested system for small catering businesses called . This management system can be downloaded from the website, or you can order a free information pack by calling 0845 606 0667. This pack will help you:
- comply with the regulations
- show you how to make and display food safely
- protect your business's reputation
- improve your business.
