New artwork creates welcoming gateway into Didcot

A new series of artworks has been unveiled at Didcot Parkway Station as part of the Connecting Communities arts project.
The project, funded by Great Western Railway Customer and Community Improvement Fund in partnership with South Oxfordshire District Council’s Didcot Garden Town team, is designed to create a more positive, welcoming and uplifting environment from the station and into the Cow Lane underpass, a key pedestrian and cycling route.
The underpass forms an important connection between Didcot Parkway railway station, the town centre, and Ladygrove.
Together, they will create an outdoor gallery for residents and visitors to enjoy as they travel through the town.
The pieces have been shaped by extensive community engagement, including collaborations with young people from Didcot TRAIN, volunteers from Didcot Railway Centre, and local community groups.
Their contributions have helped ensure the artworks reflect Didcot’s heritage, local landscapes, and the strong sense of place valued by the community.
Cllr Anne-Marie Simpson, Cabinet Member for Planning Policy including Garden Communities, said: “This project is a fantastic example of how creativity and community involvement can transform public spaces. The new artworks not only brighten a well-used walking and cycling route but also celebrate Didcot’s heritage and the people who live here. We are pleased to see local young people and community groups at the heart of shaping a space that feels safer, more welcoming and connected.”
Kim Higgs, Didcot Parkway Station Manager, said: “The artwork has made a real positive impact to the Station and its visitors. It tells a story of Didcot and also triggers thoughts and memories; it means something to people.”
