How to find Wallingford Castle Meadows

Wallingford Castle Meadows are open to the public every day of the year and can be accessed from the following locations:

From a kissing gate at the end of Cemetery Lane, off Castle Street/Shillingford Road. This gate is suitable for large mobility vehicles. Cemetery Lane is accessible to mobility vehicles but is heavily potholed. There is a drop kerb on the opposite pavement approximately 20 metres from the entrance to Cemetery Lane but no footpath on the Cemetery Lane side of the road. Mobility vehicles coming from the town will need to negotiate 20 metres of road to reach Cemetery Lane.

From a link through Castle Gardens, off Bear Lane/Castle Street, between the following hours:

  • 10am – 4pm every weekday in summer (April to September)
  • 10am – 5.30pm summer weekends (April to September)
  • 10am – 3pm in winter (October to March)

This link is accessed via a very steep slope (20% gradient). There is a small kissing gate at the access point into Castle Meadows that will not accommodate mobility vehicles.

From two kissing gates along the Thames Path that runs from Wallingford to Benson. The Thames Path at Wallingford is reached via Castle Lane, which is off the High Street between the Town Arms and the Boathouse public houses. Please note that this path is subject to flooding and is very uneven in places. There is a small bridge on the Thames Path, just before the southernmost Castle Meadows gate, which has steeply sloping access ramps.  Both kissing gates are suitable for large mobility vehicles. The northernmost gate is reached by first passing through a farm gate accessed by a RADAR key.

By car
There is no car parking on site, however there is very limited parking available in Cemetery Lane which can also be used as a drop off/pick up point. Cemetery Lane is accessible to vehicles but is heavily potholed. There is room at the end of the lane to turn vehicles around but this can become very boggy in wet weather. There are several car parks in Wallingford within easy walking distance of the site:

Castle Street Car Park
A small pay and display car park which is frequently full during the week and at peak holiday times. Disabled parking spaces are available.

Waitrose Car Park, High Street
A pay and display, short stay car park (max 2 hours). Disabled parking spaces are available.

There are also two car parks from where you can access Castle Meadows via the Thames Path; however, the bridge on the Thames Path has steep access ramps.

Riverside Car Park
A large grass car park situated on the opposite side of the river in Crowmarsh Gifford. Access to the site is along the Thames Path which is reached by climbing a steep slope out of the car park and a gentler slope over Wallingford Bridge. This car park is subject to flooding during extreme wet weather.

Thames Street Car Park
Located in Wallingford town centre, a short distance from Castle Lane. Access to the site is along the Thames Path. Disabled parking spaces are available.
