Swimming pool at Henley Leisure Centre to temporarily close for essential maintenance

Released on August 9, 2016

Due to essential maintenance work, the swimming pool at Henley Leisure Centre will be closed during some periods over the next two weeks.

The swimming pool will be closed as follows:

  • From 8.30am to 4pm from Monday 15 to Friday 19 August – swimming lessons will continue as normal in the evenings
  • From Monday 22 to Friday 26 August the pool will be closed completely – swimming lessons will be cancelled and members will receive discounted rates on lessons in September.

The rest of the facilities at the leisure centre will remain open as usual.

The work being carried out is to replace the swimming pool air handling unit.  This will improve the environment, reduce maintenance, enhance reliability and significantly reduce energy usage at the centre.

Customers of Henley Leisure Centre wishing to swim when the pool is closed can access the eight Better-operated swimming pools in South Oxfordshire and the Vale of the White Horse, as well as the Rivermead Leisure Complex in Reading.

Kevin Williams, General Manager at Henley Leisure Centre, said: “We apologise to customers for any inconvenience they may experience.  However, once complete the environmental benefits of the new system will be significant.  During the closure period anyone who wishes to use the gym, studios, or squash courts can do so as normal.”

Cllr Jane Murphy, Deputy Leader at South Oxfordshire District Council, said: “The work we’re carrying out will mean we save significant amounts of energy at Henley Leisure Centre and help to ensure we keep maintenance costs down too.  We’ve managed to keep the pool closure to a relatively short time, the rest of the centre will still be open, and there’s plenty of options for people who wish to carry on swimming while the work is taking place.”
