Adopted and Unadopted Roads

Not all roads are the responsibility of local authorities.

Adopted roads are public highways that are maintained by local authorities or government bodies. This means that local authorities have responsibility for their condition, including cleaning.

Unadopted roads are the responsibility of the landowner or managing agent and include private roads and roads on new developments until they have been adopted.  Street cleaning and litter are not the responsibility of the councils on these roads.
