Selling to the council – adding social value

The Public Services Social Value Act 2012 requires the council to consider how the economic, social and environmental wellbeing of its area may be improved when buying public service contracts.

It allows the council to take into consideration, in the award of contracts, any offer of additional community benefit over and above the specified requirements, where these meet the council’s priorities.

The Public Services (Social Value) Act 2012 is intended to have as a positive impact on:

  • growth in the local economy by supporting local business and community groups
  • improvements and protection of the local environment
  • residents’ health, safety and wellbeing in the community by maintaining and improving the services provided including supporting vulnerable residents, reducing health inequalities and improves educational attainment
