Over £1 million funding boost for Didcot Broadway council homes

“Didcot deserves the best, and the council is delivering this for our residents!” Cllr Tony Worgan, South Oxfordshire District Council Cabinet Member for Housing and Planning Development Management, celebrated the news of over £1 million secured towards the Didcot Broadway development.
South Oxfordshire District Council has secured more than £1 million in government funding for its Didcot Broadway redevelopment project, marking a major milestone in plans to deliver new social homes in the heart of the town.
The council has been awarded £1,072,805 from Homes England’s Social and Affordable Homes Programme towards the redevelopment of the site between 116 and 120 Broadway, Didcot.
The funding will support the delivery of a new social council housing scheme on the former site, which was cleared and secured following demolition of 116 and 118 in the summer 2025.
The project will see the construction and refurbishment of nine one and two-bedroom apartments alongside a new ground-floor community space area helping to bring new life to this part of Broadway while providing much-needed homes for local people.
The project is now moving into its next phase of construction. This is expected to begin on site in autumn 2026, with completion anticipated in autumn 2027.
Once complete, the homes will be owned and managed by South Oxfordshire District Council and offered at social rent rates, supporting the council’s commitment to providing homes and infrastructure that meet local needs.

This is fantastic news for Didcot and a significant step forward for a project that will deliver real benefits for our residents. Securing more than £1 million from Homes England demonstrates confidence in our plans to create high-quality council owned homes in a sustainable town-centre location. This funding, alongside the investment from the council, will make this ambitious plan a reality.
“Not only will this provide new homes, but it will also transform the site that has long been in need of rejuvenation. The development will help address housing need and will also create an attractive new building that enhances this section of Broadway and contributes to Didcot’s transformation.”
Designed with sustainability at their core, the new build apartments will be built to high environmental standards of Passivhaus (a voluntary building standard for ultra-high energy efficiency), incorporating sustainable construction methods and delivering zero-carbon homes fit for the future.
Given the site’s central location, the scheme has been designed as a car-free development, with dedicated bicycle storage to encourage active and sustainable travel.
Cllr Worgan added: “We are particularly proud that these homes will be built to high environmental standards, supporting our ambitions to tackle climate change while providing comfortable, energy-efficient homes for future tenants.”

Didcot West ward councillor, Cllr Ian Snowdon said: “Additional external funding for Didcot is welcome, particularly where it helps deliver much needed social housing and reduces the burden on local taxpayers. As the local ward councillor, I want to see this site brought back into productive use as soon as possible.”
The project forms part of the council’s wider commitment to increasing the supply of social housing across South Oxfordshire and delivering developments that support thriving, sustainable communities.
The redevelopment team is also working on options to include a public artwork, with ideas currently being developed as part of the wider vision for the site.
Alongside the Homes England contribution, the council is the main funder of the project, with investment from Section 106 funding (the money the council collects from developers).
