Outdoor pools season extended and doggy swims are back!

Published 1 September 2025

Swimmers and families will get to enjoy an extra week of fun at the Riverside outdoor pool in Wallingford and Abbey Meadow outdoor pool in Abingdon!

Both pools and splash pads will be open until Sunday 7 September. GLL who manage the outdoor pools and splash pads on behalf of South Oxfordshire and Vale of White Horse District Councils announced the extension on the 22 August in agreement with the councils.

This will allow for more swimming time while the schools are still closed and give everyone more time to make the most of these popular facilities.

After a successful debut last year Swim for Dogs is back on Monday 8 September for hourly sessions between 2 and 7pm, giving dogs a chance to splash around before the pools are decommissioned for the winter. These sessions are now available to book on the Better website and app.

Cllr Andy Crawford, Cabinet Member for Property and Housing at Vale of White Horse District Council said: “It’s great that we’re able to open the pool for longer this summer. It’s been brilliant to see so many visitors this summer, and we look forward to welcoming everyone again next year.”

Cllr Georgina Heritage, Cabinet Member for Communities at South Oxfordshire District Council said: “I’m really pleased we can extend the season again this summer, Riverside is a great pool for swimmers and for families to enjoy and make the most of those last few days of the school holiday.

“I’m looking forward to seeing the pictures of the dogs having fun too!”

Anyone with a season pass can have this extended by the Better Leisure team.

Kevin Williams Partnership Manager at GLL for South Oxfordshire and the Vale of White Horse said: “After a fantastic summer, we’re delighted to be able to extend the opening of both Abbey Meadow and Riverside outdoor pools, for an additional week, until 7 September.  Meaning local residents and visitors can enjoy the last blast of summer, while the weather remains warm.

“The season will be rounded off, on the 8 of September, with our ever popular ‘Dog Swims’ at both pools, ensuring our canine friends can enjoy a ‘one off’ dip before we close for the winter.”

The kiosks at both locations will also be open during this time and on Monday 8 September there will be treats available to buy for the dogs after their swims.
