Housing advice and support for those leaving the Armed Forces

If you are leaving the armed forces or if you are a veteran, you may be entitled to extra help if you become homeless.

The Joint Service Housing Advice Office (JSHAO) provides help with the transition from forces to civilian life and can give housing advice to veterans who are leaving the armed forces. The Veterans Housing Advice service (VHA) provides ways for ex-service personnel to secure permanent accommodation.

You can search for private rented accommodation with financial assistance from the MOD Tenancy Deposit Loan Scheme.

Homelessness after leaving the Armed Forces

You may qualify for housing assistance if you are homeless or at risk of homelessness. However, you may be considered ‘intentionally homeless’ if you have been discharged on disciplinary grounds. Contact our housing needs team on 01235 422452 to find out more. You may be asked to provide proofs including:

• A copy of notice to vacate service accommodation

• Full details of any lump sum payments that you are due to receive upon leaving

• ID for all family members and proof of child benefit

• Immigration status proof for all family members.

The Armed Forces Covenant

The Armed Forces covenant is a promise from the nation that those who serve or have served and their families will be treated fairly. Search for Armed Forces Covenant at www.gov.uk for more info.
