The Government outlined several proposals to help small businesses from 2019/2020 onwards:
Retail Rate Relief
The Government intends to help town centres and High Streets evolve by cutting business rate bills by one-third for retail properties (including shops, cafes and restaurants) with a rateable value below £51,000, benefitting up to 90% of retail premises, for two years from April 2019. This is subject to state aid limits.
The Government will introduce 100% rate relief for all public lavatories from 2020/2021.
Local newspaper discount
The existing £1,500 discount for office space occupied by a local newspaper will continue for 2019/2020.
Self-catering and holiday let accommodation
The Government will consult on the criteria under which self-catering, and holiday lets become liable to business rates rather than council tax to reduce fraud.
