What can go in each bin (flats)?

Blue food bin

Your food is collected every week. Use your small kitchen caddy to collect your food scraps each day and then transfer them into the larger food recycling bin which we’ll empty each week. 

What can I put in my food recycling bin?

All your raw and cooked food waste such as leftovers and spoilt food, and including:

  • meat and fish – raw and cooked including bones
  • all dairy products such as cheese and eggs
  • raw and cooked vegetables and fruit
  • bread, cakes and pastries
  • rice, pasta and beans
  • uneaten food from your plates and dishes
  • tea bags and coffee grounds
  • cooking oil, lard and fats (can be placed in a plastic bottle inside the caddy) 
  • old cut flowers

The green recycling bin

Here’s a list of the things you can put in your green recycling wheelie bin or sack.

Plastic

  • Empty carrier bags
  • Cleaning product and beauty product bottles
  • Drinks bottles (and tops)
  • Food and drink cartons (like soup or juice cartons)
  • Food trays (including black trays)
  • Ice cream tubs
  • Large sweet tubs
  • Margarine tubs
  • Plastic milk cartons and bottles
  • Yoghurt pots

When possible, please squash the bottle to make more space in your bin.

Paper and cardboard

  • Books – (can also be donated to charity shops etc)
  • Catalogues
  • Phone directories
  • Cereal boxes
  • Cardboard and cardboard boxes
  • Envelopes (including envelopes with plastic windows)
  • Greeting cards (no glitter)
  • Junk mail
  • Magazines and newspapers
  • Shredded paper
  • Tissue boxes
  • Toilet roll tubes
  • Writing paper

Glass

  • bottles – any colour – the lids can go in your green wheelie bin too, but please remove them and chuck them in separately
  • jars – any colour

Metal

  • Aerosols
  • Clean foil
  • Food tins and cans including pet food
  • Steel and aluminium food and drink cans (please wash and squash them first)
  • Metal lids (bottle and jar lids)

The black bin

What we cannot recycle must go in the black bin

Plastic we can’t recycle

  • Black bags
  • Cling film or film from the top of food trays
  • Hard plastic items such as coat hangers, lunch boxes and children’s toys – if these are in good condition, consider taking them to a charity shop
  • Plastic wrappers for sweets, biscuits, crisp packets, salad bags
  • Polystyrene
  • Pouches for pet food or baby food

Paper and card we can’t recycle

  • Kitchen roll
  • Tissues
  • Toilet paper

Glass we can’t recycle

  • Window panes
  • Glass cookware or Pyrex
  • Spectacle lenses
  • Broken drinks glasses

Metal we can’t recycle

  • Metal coat hangers
  • Picture wire
  • Kitchen knives
  • Pots and pans
