Repairs and adaptations

If you're on a low income and your property is in serious disrepair, or if you or a family member is experiencing difficulty in managing at home because of a disability the council may be able to help you in the following ways.

Home repair assistance

For essential small repairs up to £5,000 the council may be able to award a grant.  Grants in excess of £500 may be repayable on the sale of the property.

Disabled Facilities Grants

Disabled facilities grants cover the cost of adaptations to help disabled people continue to live independently in their home.  The council must approve the work before any grant is paid.

Disabled facilities grants cover work like widening doorways, installing ramps, improving access e.g. to the bathroom, and adapting heat and light controls among many other works. Funds are limited and so will go to those in greatest need.  The housing team can carry out a provisional means test to find out if you are likely to qualify for a grant before you apply.  This form can be downloaded from the menu on the right.
