Brilliant Didcot - Background Information

Didcot as a New Growth Point

Didcot was first designated as a growth area in 1979 and is likely to grow by another 9000 dwellings over the next 20 to 25 years. As a result, Didcot's population is likely to increase from 15,000 in 1981 to over 35,000 residents by 2016.

With this rapid growth Didcot has a real opportunity to improve on its local facilities and develop a strong image.

Over the past three years South Oxfordshire District Council has been in a New Growth Points partnership with Government to access much needed funding for this purpose.  This has provided funding to help bring forward the growth in Didcot and to promote Didcot as a Brilliant place to live in, work in and visit.

The projects include:

  • The extension of the existing Orchard Centre to provide a regenerated town centre providing new shops cafes, bars, and community facilities as well as new residential accommodation.
  • Development of an enhanced image for Didcot which includes the promotion of the Brilliant Didcot branding which can now be seen on the newly opened LadyGrove Loop and wil feature on the new train station signage
  • natural green spaces for Didcot
  • upgraded railway station access and forecourt
  • The Ladygrove Loop
  • Public Art for the existing Orchard centre
  • Establishment of the Didcot Community Forum and its continued role in consultation with the community

South Oxfordshire District Council will involve Didcot residents and others with a keen interest in the town in developing proposals that support the housing growth at Didcot and that help make it a vibrant and exciting place to be.
