Abandoned vehicles

The Council is responsible for dealing with abandoned vehicles i.e. any vehicles that are untaxed and have no known owner.

How to report an abandoned vehicle

You can report an abandoned vehicles using the online form below:

Alternatively, contact Environmental Services on 01491 823455 or email environmental.services@southoxon.gov.uk

Abandoned vehicles on private land

If the abandoned vehicle is on your private land, the Council can deal with it faster if you send written authorisation by email to environmental.services@southoxon.gov.uk , phone 01491 823455 or fax to 01491 823804, giving permission for the council to go onto the private land to deal with the vehicle.  A 15 day land notice does not then need to be issued.

What action will the Council take?

The Council uses the following procedure when we receive report of an abandoned vehicle:

  • If a vehicle is abandoned on the public highway, a 24 hour or 7 day notice will be placed on the vehicle during inspection.
  • If the vehicle is on private land, a 15 day land notice will be issued to the owner of the land and a 7 day notice placed on the vehicle.
  • On expiry of the notices, Thames Valley Police will remove and dispose of the vehicle.
  • Once the vehicle has been destroyed, an invoice for the removal and disposal of the vehicle will be sent to the last known keeper.

How long does it take?

Thames Valley Police is working closely with the Council to reduce the time taken to remove abandoned and unwanted vehicles in South Oxfordshire. A target has been set to remove vehicles from the highway within 7 days of the Council being notified.
