Housing strategy

Every three years the Council is required by Government to write a housing strategy outlining the aims and objectives of the service together with an action plan. For our latest Housing Strategy update see the menu on the right.

About the Housing Strategy

The strategy has to include all areas of the housing service:

  • housing advice
  • homelessness
  • private sector housing
  • development of new affordable housing

The Housing Strategy is assessed and monitored to make sure that the Council performs well.  We consult widely about the housing strategy and welcome your views via the feedback form.  You can view or download the strategy and feedback form using the menu on the right.

Building new affordable homes

The Council no longer owns or builds any houses. We work closely with Registered Social Landlords (RSL) to identify development sites and obtain funding to build new homes for local people. People from the Council’s housing register will then be offerred the new homes.

Through this partnership over 600 affordable homes have been provided over the past 5 years.  The Government this year announced that it has awarded Social Housing Grants worth £17 million. This will provide of 337 new homes in South Oxfordshire over the next 2 years. The RSLs will be responsible for building the new homes. The development programme can be found in the Housing Strategy.

Progress to date

The Council has made a commitment to build 300 new homes between April 2003 and March 2007. So far 237 new homes have been provided. In addition to these, 48 more homes are under construction in various locations.

There are also 78 units with planning consent where work has not yet started, and applications pending for a further 1100 new homes (Great Western Park, Lady Grove East and Blue Mountains).
