Housing

Homelessness

If you think you might become homeless you should contact Housing as soon as possible to get housing advice. Housing will try to prevent this from happening so the earlier you can get in touch the better your chances are of keeping a roof over your head.

How can we help?

We will try to help you keep your current accommodation or find suitable privately rented accommodation.  If you are homeless it doesn't mean you can jump the queue for the housing register.  We will assess your housing application and give you points using the same points scheme as other applicants for the housing register.  The points scheme does give priority for homelessness but applicants who are not homeless may still have higher points, depending on their circumstances.

If you make a homeless application, we will investigate your situation and make a decision about whether you meet the statutory criteria.  If necessary you will be placed in temporary accommodation until either a decision is reached on your homeless application or you are nominated for a Housing Association property.

Temporary accommodation

Most temporary accommodation is in short term rented accommodation or supported accommodation for vulnerable people.  Bed and Breakfasts (B&Bs) are only used as a last resort and for the shortest possible time.  If you are placed in a B&B you are likely to be moved to alternative temporary accommodation as soon as it is available.

Rent Deposit Scheme

The Council runs a Rent Deposit Scheme  that aims to stop people from becoming homeless by helping them find a secure home.

Supported Lodgings

This is a scheme set up to provide housing for homeless Young People within people’s homes. If you are a young person between the ages of 16-25 please follow this link to find out more about Supported Lodgings .
