Planning appeals
Appeals against the council's planning decisions are made to the Secretary of State for the Environment. The Planning Inspectorate are appointed to deal with appeals on behalf of the First Secretary of State.
How to make an appeal
If you wish to make an appeal, you will need to contact the Planning Inspectorate.
Advice on how to lodge an appeal against the council's planning decisions is contained on the decision notices we issue.
Who makes planning appeals?
Most appeals are lodged by applicants who have submitted a planning application which the council has decided to refuse.
The public can express views on any development proposal which becomes the subject of an appeal. However members of the public are not able to appeal to the Secretary of State against a planning decision taken by the council.
There are a variety of other matters that become subject to appeal including enforcement notices issued by the council against unauthorised development.
How is an appeal dealt with?
Appeals can be dealt with in a number of ways. Most appeals are resolved through an exchange of written representations but in some cases an informal hearing or a public inquiry will be arranged.
Officers in Planning Appeals and Enforcement represent the council's case when an appeal is lodged against a planning decision taken by the council.
The Planning Appeals Register
The council is able to provide information about the status of an appeal at any stage before a decision is issued. Anyone who has already made representations to the Council on a planning proposal, will be informed when an appeal is lodged.
You can view exisiting appeals via our online Planning Appeals Register:
