Hygiene inspections

The Food and Safety team has the legal responsibility to inspect all food businesses throughout the district on a regular basis, to ensure that the requirements of food safety legislation are met.

The inspections usually last about an hour and involve an officer assessing the structure and facilities of a food business as well as inspecting records and food safety procedures. Food Safety officers have the right to enter and inspect food premises at any time during the company's working hours and do not have to make an appointment.

The length of time between visits is determined by carrying out a risk assessment of the premises and categorising it accordingly.

Category Inspection
A at least every 6 months
B at least every 12 months
C at least every 18 months
D at least every 2 years
E at least every 3 years
