Council and democracy

Council

South Oxfordshire District Council provides services for the people who live and work in South Oxfordshire and those visiting the area.  It uses around 10% of the council tax it collects to help pay for these services.

Around 80% of the council tax goes to Oxfordshire County Council whose services include education, social services, roads, waste disposal and libraries.  The remainder goes to Thames Valley Police and, in some cases, parish and town councils.

Directing the work of the Council are 48 councillors elected by the voters of South Oxfordshire. District Council elections are held every four years.
