Community, people and living

Equality and diversity

Here at South Oxfordshire District Council we are committed to promoting equal opportunities when providing services to the community and as an employer.  We oppose all forms of unlawful or unfair discrimination on the grounds of colour, race, nationality, ethnic or national origin, gender or gender reassignment, sexual orientation, religion, belief, marital status, refugee and asylum seeker status, disability, caring responsibility or age.

We accept that treating people as equals is not about treating them the same, nor is it about ignoring differences.  To treat people equally, we need to treat everyone fairly with due respect to their differing needs.

Our Comprehensive Equality Scheme sets out how we aim to ensure equality of access is part of everything we do within service delivery and employment.  This scheme replaces our Race, Disability and Gender schemes.  It is accompanied by a companion document that identifies the outcomes we are aiming to achieve and how service teams are ensuring equal access in relation to race, disability and gender, and has a separate action plan.

To view or comment on our annual progress report relating to our equality work program, download the document on the right hand side, sending your comments to equalities@southoxon.gov.uk or by calling 01491 823047.

We also have a Comprehensive Equality Policy and Corporate Equality Action Plan, (You can view/download these documents from the menu on the right).

Translation and interpretation policy

As part of ensuring all our residents have equal access to council information and services we have a translation and interpretation policy.  This sets out our approach to responding to requests and proactively offering these services. You can view or down load this policy from the menu on the right.
