New council moorings open

Big boost for Wallingford
South Oxfordshire District Council is celebrating the completion of its £285,000 new short stay moorings on the River Thames between Wallingford and Crowmarsh Gifford.
The Southern Oxfordshire LEADER supported the project with a grant of £35,000.
The council identified the moorings as the most requested area for improvement by boaters on the river. The new moorings should prove especially popular for boaters wishing to stop off and enjoy Wallingford and will hopefully help encourage more trade to the town.
Breheny Civil Engineering carried out the work on the moorings, which started in March. As well as being used by private boats, people will be able to enjoy trips from the new moorings with Salters Steamers, who currently operate passenger services from this location at the far end from the bridge. Another organisation, Rivertime Boat Trust, who run a boat specially adapted for disabled users, will also be able to use the new moorings.
Rodney Mann, Cabinet member responsible for economic development, said:
“It is fantastic news the moorings are open and ready for the summer. Extending the number of available short stay moorings has been talked about for many years. Seeing it come to fruition is exciting as well as great news for boaters and for Wallingford. The new moorings will mean more passing river traffic can stop off and enjoy the charms of the town centre rather than just cruising past on the Thames.”
The official opening is planned for July.
