Release date: Feb 9, 2009
Results of campaign which ran in January...
GO Active, a new campaign to help adults in Oxfordshire lead a more active lifestyle, launched this January with the ‘3 Million Calorie Burn Challenge’ and a host of other free activities, events and incentives at local authority, private and community venues across the county.
After burning over 1 million calories in the first week of the challenge, people in Oxfordshire went on to smash the 3 million target set, to burn a whopping 4 million 800 thousand calories during January! That’s a staggering 14,000 Christmas Puddings, enough energy to power a street of houses for a month, and equivalent to burning 1,400 pounds of fat, that’s 100 stone!
South Oxfordshire led the way, burning the highest amount of calories in the county, closely followed by Cherwell and then Oxford City.Toni Bridges, Active Recreation Manager, Oxfordshire Sport Partnership and Project Manager for GO Active, said, “The launch of GO Active has been a huge success. As well as surpassing our calorie burn target, we’ve helped people who wanted to get more active in 2009 find activities to suit them. Now the focus will be on finding out what the activity gaps in Oxfordshire are and working to ensure that everyone has access to an activity that they enjoy.”
GO Active aims to help people get more active by providing the information, motivation and support to get active, feel good, have fun and meet new friends. The GO Active team steer people towards existing activities and develop new ones dependent on local need.
