Guidance for applications

If you are renewing a licence, please do not apply more than 4 weeks before the expiry date. Renewal applications will be given priority, and then prioritised by expiry date. We will do our best to process your application as quickly as possible.

You will need to print off this application form (139.5 KB) Word 97-2003 and complete as normal, including signing and dating the form. Please take care to complete the application form in full. Any incomplete or illegible applications will be rejected and will not be processed.

You need to scan this application and upload through our online application portal, with any supporting documents. If you do not have access to a scanner, you could try to photograph each page of the form but please note it must be clear and legible or we will not be able to process it.  Please contact us if you are unable to do this.

When we have a completed correct application and payment, we will process the application and issue the licence. We will then post this licence out to you by first class recorded delivery (someone will need to be in to sign for this). You will not be able to collect the plate from the office. Please do not telephone the offices at this time, as this will only prevent us from processing applications. 

Changing your vehicle

If you wish to change the vehicle that is covered by your hackney carriage vehicle licence you need to complete this application form (142.0 KB) Word 97-2003 This form and the supporting documents should then be submitted in the same way as above.

Transferring a licence

If you buy a vehicle that is already licensed as a hackney carriage vehicle then you can apply to have the vehicle's licence transferred into your name using this application form (139.5 KB) Word 97-2003 . This form and the supporting documents should then be submitted in the same way as above.

This is the current list of approved taxi compliance testing centres (20.5 KB) PDF .  Please note that only a valid certificate of compliance provided from one of these garages will be accepted when licensing your vehicle.

Hackney carriage vehicles must hold insurance that states that they are covered for public hire before a licence is issued.

Accident reporting

Where damage that requires repair arises from an accident, the proprietor is required to report the accident to the council. The council's primary concern is to ensure the vehicle is in a safe and suitable condition to be used as a licensed vehicle. Please email a completed accident report form (96.5 KB) Word 97-2003 to licensing@southoxon.gov.uk within three working days of the accident along with photos of the damage to the vehicle. You may be asked to bring the vehicle for inspection and it may also be required to pass a compliance test to ensure the vehicle is safe for use.
